Sophos tracks Aur0ra operators using AI agents to breach Active Directory

What a defender needs to know

Aur0ra operators supplied AI agents with VPN credentials, SOCKS access, targets and objectives, according to Sophos X-Ops. The agents performed Active Directory discovery, pursued credentials and moved across Windows networks; in some environments they reached domain management access and searched shares and backup repositories. Three victims in Sophos’ investigation later appeared on Aur0ra’s leak site. Human operators chose the targets and furnished the initial foothold.

CloudSEK’s separate affiliate investigation found repeated LDAP and SMB discovery, credential attacks, Cursor-assisted planning and staged encryptors in recovered operator material. It counted more than twenty compromised organizations in its April-to-July dataset and four later leak-site listings. Keep those counts tied to their respective investigations.

Correlate VPN or SOCKS access with domain-controller service-ticket and certificate events, LDAP and SMB enumeration, privileged logons, bulk share reads and backup access. Sophos identifies exfiltration infrastructure 152[.]236[.]4[.]14 and Cobalt Strike infrastructure 152[.]236[.]3[.]8; treat historical matches as leads because IP addresses can be reallocated. Isolate hosts with a correlated intrusion sequence and preserve EDR, VPN and domain-controller logs. Reduce standing domain-admin rights, restrict WinRM to administrative hosts, apply SMB signing and keep backup administration on separate credentials and a restricted segment. Verify an ordinary domain account cannot administer backups or enroll for privileged certificates, while your logging records suspicious domain activity.
